SMART CUTS Winners

"Putek," a collaboration of talented independent animator Ramon del Prado and film major Ma. Theresa Clamor, bagged the P30,000 grand prize in the Smart Cuts 60-second short film competition at the 2nd .MOV International Digital Film Festival awards night held at SM City Cebu last March 7.

Del Prado, a Communication Arts graduate from the De La Salle University – Taft, is the same animator behind the award-winning short "Egg" while Clamor, a third year University of the Philippines Film Institute student, directed "Aparador" which won third place in the narrative category of the 6th UP Film and Video Festival.

The animation entry, which focuses on a young man who decided to end his life by jumping off a building, bested 11 other finalists to the contest sponsored by leading wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc.

Smart Public Affairs officer Novaleeh Clotario-Concepcion handed the top prize to del Prado and Clamor, who both flew in from Manila to accept
their award.

"Smart Cuts is another venue for Filipino digital filmmakers to explore their creativity. With the advent of affordable digital video cameras and phones
with video capabilities, we are seeing an increasing popularity in the medium," said Smart Public Affairs Head Ramon Isberto, whose company tied up with .MOV organizer Filmless Films.

Victor Louie Villanueva and Carlo Aguilar, both from the University of San Carlos, took home the P20,000 second prize for "Bitin sa Pagmamahal" while Rogerson Dennis Fernandez, from UP Baguio, bagged the P10,000
third prize for "Baguiomorphosis."

The other Smart Cuts finalists are "Piso" (Kristoffer Villarino), "For Love or Money" (Christian Vallez),"Tap" (Gabby Alcazaren), "Djembe" (Emmanuel Cogama, Jake Ofrasio, and Audrey Silo), "The Diet" (Gabby Alcazaren), "Sige Yosi Pa" (Titam Rebueno and del Prado), "Mochi (Rice Cake)" (Elmina Rayah Dizon),"Pintuan" (Richard Legaspi), and "Toilet Dreams" (Jules Katanyag).

Jury member Roxlee, considered the father of experimental/underground cinema in the Philippines, was pleased with all the entries to the competition.

"This contest proved that there are a lot of good young filmmakers from all over the country and I hope this will be an annual event to help discover new talents in filmmaking," he said.
