Silvershorts Finalists with Raya Martin, Lav Diaz, Khavn De La Cruz, John Torres and Alexis Tioseco

.MOV WINS OVER MARCE : BLINDING THE EYE OF REAL STORMS | 09.11.2008 | Mabie
September 9, 2008 – Storm Marce came, we saw the flood rise up the streets of Manila, and still we conquered it with our own party to introduce the Silvershorts finalists at Mag:Net Katipunan. Last Tuesday, .MOV set out to blind the eye of the storm, and blind it we sure did.
Never mind the rain, never mind the traffic. We had our own cluster of stars shining inside Mag:Net, and no amount of gray cloud could dampen their brightness. Seen in the scene were Lav Diaz, Khavn De La Cruz, Raya Martin, Ruelo Lozendo, Alexis Tioseco, and John Torres.
But they weren’t the only folks to look out for. We also had the budding directors at hand to introduce and give certificates to as the finalists for .MOV’s Silvershorts Short Film Competition. Student finalists Minco Fabregas, Jedd Chris Dumaguina, Aissa Penafiel, Mel Rose Aguilar, Arbi Mari Larano and Juan Alcazaren braved the rain to join in on the fun, while four other finalists for the Open Category, two of which had representatives, also arrived despite the terrible traffic in the Metro: Richard Legaspi, Jose Maria Basa, J.I.E. Teodoro, and Ray Gibraltar (the last 2 represented by Oscar Nava).
Hosted by Nerissa Guevarra, we were given a treat with the screenings of the following flicks:
• "A Date With Jao Mapa" by QUARK HENARES
• "Bisitasyon" by ATO BAUTISTA
• "Bloodbank" by PAM MIRAS
• "Sulyap" by MO ZEE
After the popcorn has ran out, and after the lights were turned back on, it was then time to pump up the music, courtesy of Chilitees, Khavn De la Cruz and Jesus Mafia (featuring Norman Wilwayco, Palanca Grand Prize for Novel, 2002 and 2008).
Marce definitely was no match for the Signal number 3 raised at the .MOV Silvershorts Finalists party. To check out what else went down, some of the photos from the event can be viewed at http://dotmovfest.blogspot.com.
And if you missed last Tuesday’s event, there’s no reason to fret, cause we can assure you this is but a taste of more great parties to come from .MOV. The scene to be seen at from October 1 to October 3 is at the Cubao X compound area, with ground zero at MOGWAI Cinematheque and Kolektib. This is what’s shaking up the heart of old Manila on those nights (because we do know how to cook up a partaaaaay).

A young filmmaker hitting the big time, a low budget digital film
turning into a cult classic, and a successful world class film festival
in a third world country--these things do not only happen in the
movies. Because beginning September 30 to October 4, 2008 at Robinsons
Movieworld, Robinsons Galleria, .MOV (dot-mov) - the first digital film
festival in the country – will pixelate your digital dreams with new
films, new filmmakers, and new technology. The week-long festival will
showcase innovative films from independent filmmakers both from the
local and international arena through a series of events and screenings
starting with Digital Dekalogo: 10x10, an exhibition of ten of the best
foreign digital features explained through the expert eyes of ten local
fillmmakers.
The inaugural event will be followed by Shorts.MOV, a showcase of the
best digital short films in the world from the two most prestigious
international short film festivals, Clemont-Ferrand (France) and
Oberhausen (Germany), as well as the Silvershorts, a short film
competition for students and professionals. Also, a special programming
of rare, out-of-print Filipino classic films scored live by the
country's most recognized independent bands like Radioactive Sago
Project, Pedicab, and Queso, will be featured for a digital twist that
underscores the festival's aim to showcase film's ever changing
language. Another highlight, cineastes would look forward to is .MOV's
tribute to local filmmaking mavericks – Lav Diaz, Roxlee and Kidlat
Tahimik - with a book, CD and DVD launch plus premieres of
“Melancholia”, “Roxleetrospective”, and “Maikli at Tahimik” (“Short
& Silent”).
.MOV will have workshops led by world-renowned industry experts as well
as a young critics' initiative that focuses on teaching how to write
about films by tackling a new wave of criticism, retrospection, and
commentary on films to help artists to interface with the international
community.
With this slew of a variety of digital features and short films from
around the world, exclusive enriching activities that covers all facets
of digital filmmaking and a mix of local and international talents in
one festival, maybe what they say really is true - it doesn't happen in
the movies, it happens in .MOV.
